a dead eyed smile a.k.a. Lakefront Poetry

Empty skies mirror our empty lies
City lights black out the skies
Stars unseen by my eyes
No one even tries
Everyone dies
No whys
Just haunted, accusing eyes
Asking pardon for a life of lies

Time to write from the heart
the fountain from whence springs the art
I’ve been too caught up in my head
tryin to do right, tryin to make bread
But gotta watch my back and keep my balance
Though all it takes to make me fall is one errant glace
From me to you, you to me, sea to sea
And I’m falling

Why do gulls cry? Did they once sing?
They can fly, grace on a wing
Are they sad today? Crying for the past?
Do they know we are the last?
Or do they remember what used to be
Unspoiled pure, beach and sea
Maybe they just cry to count the hours
Maybe their lives are as sad as ours
