7:15 AM, Wednesay January 4th

sunrise paints the sky
in parallel pastel pieces of
mosaic music unfolding slowly
cloud tapestry slowly woven glowing

but first the black blues at the horizon
            night receding shade by shade
almost without noticing, the blue is purpled
            warmth infusing, rising from
some thermal vent in the blue sky sea
            reflected pink light plays prismatic
across the undersides of white whales passing

through golden kelp rising from the seafloor horizon
            buttery dawn tendrils reaching
teasing the clouds colorful, fuschia cornflower
patterned as only van gogh could see
                        some thousand waving contours weaving
watercolor in the sky, a single moment wide
a painting slowly swirling settling onto the day
sundrawn tracery blending pastel oil paints
            apollo’s horsetail brush leaving
whorled trails in the cloud canvas
until his face rises to assess his work
and in doing so, washes it all away
